The Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung said that this is the most important airport of Vietnam and the international gateway of the capital and the north.

To date, the airport terminals have exceeded the design capacity. Even, the airport infrastructure such as runways, aprons have been damaged and degraded. If no measures were taken in time, the conditions would become worse.

Therefore, the Deputy PM asked the Ministry of Transport (MoT) to consider the possibility to expand the airport northwards to raise its capacity to 50 million passengers per year by 2030 and enlarge the airport southwards to serve 80-100 million passengers annually by 2050.

According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV), Noi Bai airport has an infrastructure capacity of about 21 million passengers, with two parallel runways. However, it received nearly 24 million passengers in 2017, posing pressure on terminals, aprons, logistics areas, internal and external transportation infrastructure.

MoT will receive non-refundable official development assistance (ODA) from the Government of France to study and revise the planning scheme.

The Deputy PM also asked the People’s Committee of Hanoi to cooperate with MoT in managing the land fund needed for the expansion of the airport, setting out a plan for site clearance and allocating land for residential resettlement. Furthermore, they must work with each other to draw up an urban planning scheme for areas surrounding the airport towards sustainable development.

MoT is also assigned to repair damages in the airport runways and prepare to implement the second phase of construction of international passenger terminal T2.

According to Hanoi’s master plan for transportation by 2030 with a vision to 2050, Noi Bai airport will be upgraded to become the northern large international airport. By 2020, Noi Bai airport will become a 4E-grade airport with passenger flow of 20-25 million passengers a year.

By 2030, the airport can receive 35 million passengers per year and 50 million passengers annually after 2030.
